Welcome to the Northern Cape

With a landscape characterized by vast arid plains, the Northern Cape is by far the largest of South Africa's provinces, while also been the least populated, with an average of 3 people per square kilometer. This is the land of Windmills, outcroppings of haphazard rock piles, extreme summer heat and magnificent star gazing opportunities.

Unlike the southern parts of the Northern Cape, which is characterized by the dry arid landscape, the northern parts of the province is characterized by the many farms that have sprung up on the banks of the mighty orange river which flows through the region. Fields of cotton, Lucerne, date and grape occupy once baron stretches of land.

Of course the Northern Cape Province of South Africa is known very well for many things i.e. The wine making form the northern regions; The Namaqualand region, in the east, and its wild spring flowers; De Aar, the hub of the South African Railway Network and Sutherland, home to SALT (Southern African Large Telescope), cold freezing winter nights and nights skies that are cloudless 350 nights out of a year, resulting in some of the best star gazing opportunities in South Africa. But the Northern Cape is probably most renowned for Kimberley, capitol of the province, and the Diamond Mining Industry, while one cannot but mention the Karoo Lamb that is ever so delicious.

The Northern Cape is a nature lover’s paradise. A holiday to this region will be like a gift to the soul. Time seems to plod along at its own pace in the many small farm communities and villages. The people are friendly and always ready with a willing smile and helping hand. Simply put, a visit to the Northern Cape is not only a must do but a necessity.
